So what’s up with this Cyclocross stuff?

I have now raced a bicycle in every type of bike-related race, except BMX, and I must say that cyclocross is the most fun…. and the most painful.  It takes the handling skills of a mountain biker, the group riding skills of a road cyclists, the full gas of a criterium racer, and the pedal-to-your-puke-point of a time trialist.  Then throw in some barriers and run ups that force you to get off your bike and run.  Crazy stuff!  And crazy fun!  This past weekend five of us competed in the Texas State Cyclocross Championships here in town.  While we are all new to the game we had some impressive results in the Cat 4 championship race: Ian Newcomb was 8th (2nd cx race ever), Vince Rosetta was 12th (1st cx race ever), Bill Earthman was 13th (1st cx race ever), and Scott McMillian was 14th.  Videos of the races are below.  The greatest performance of the weekend was Brian Fawley who won the men’s open race.  He rode his bike up every run-up.  Sure, several guys rode the run-ups in the first couple of laps.  But he rode up all of them for the entire 60 minute race.  Very impressive.  I got a closeup in the video below, and about got run over doing it.
